Cyclist down – dog

Adelaide Cyclists discussions - Sat, 12/05/2012 - 20:59

Our riding group does a lot of hills riding and we have had our fair share of animal related crashes / near misses from dogs, cows and goats. Yesterday one of us went down due to an unrestrained dog which leapt out in front of us. I seem to hear a fair share of these stories, and I am not sure what the law is on this? I guess the only quick help for this is to add a warning call of “dog-up” in our cycling vocabulary.

SSRC "L" Ride Report - 12/5/12

Adelaide Cyclists discussions - Sat, 12/05/2012 - 13:41

This mornings "L" had a distinct lack of Cricks in attendance, hence you're all stuck with my less than creative skills in report writing. Sorry.

The morning started off at a balmy temp of 10 deg......at least its was better than the 7 deg displayed in the car when I left home.

11 intrepid souls braved the brass monkey start to head south on our usual route. I'm not good a remembering names , so we'll just say Steve lead us out of Becks, with Paul McG as TEC…

This is great.

I wonder what the Taiwanese version will look like in 60 years' time.

Tony Abbots bike?

Adelaide Cyclists discussions - Fri, 11/05/2012 - 23:35

Page 7 of the advertiser today (11/5/2011) has the potential alternative prime minister looking very solemn.

In the article it suggests that when he is the boss things will be different.

In the background of the photo it shows a bike assuming it is Tony's bike and not a ring in to fit with his image what does it say?…

what maintenance to bike after a wet ride?

Adelaide Cyclists discussions - Fri, 11/05/2012 - 18:37
Hey guys,

Was just thinking about the cooler wet months coming up and it will inevitable to not ride in the rain for some of us. I wad wondering what rituals, techniques and maintenance you guys/gals do to your bike after you have ridden in the rain?

Do u just wipe the bike down and forget about it? Or are u meticulous in getting all the grit and road grime off?

If so, what cleaners and oils do you use? How far do u go to ensure the bike is riding nicely next time?

Discuss.

Adelaide Cyclists discussions - Fri, 11/05/2012 - 13:42

Hi

I am travelling to Cairns for a short course and I require a bike for a couple of days. Does anyone know where I can get a one cheaply or have any recommendations?

Or even any good cheap places to stay...

Thanks

Alright I admit this makes me 'home'sick http://www.cycling-embassy.dk/2012/05/10/cycle-concepts2012/

Imagine if just half of these concepts were adopted in SA/AUS?

Where is my magic wand?

Bicycle Muse

Utility Cycling Blog - Fri, 11/05/2012 - 06:52

If you’re in the mood for a little light-hearted bike fun this afternoon (I know I was), I’ve got just the video for you.  This video was the trailer for the Disposable Film Festival, which highlights films made with non-professional devices.  The 2012 muse for the festival was the bicycle muse in the short film below.  It’s a silly-fun video of said bicycle muse cruising the streets of San Francisco on a PUBLIC bike offering up her inspiration.  Via Velo Vogue.

El Coche Nos Cuesta

Utility Cycling Blog - Wed, 09/05/2012 - 08:45

This is a great video by the Mexican office of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy via Streetsblog and Copenhagenize.  The premise of the video is that despite how easy the car is to use for individual people on a daily basis, it has very large societal costs over the long term.  By explaining subsidies, induced demand, and other externalities in a clever and interesting way, the video produces a strong overall message that car use is truly a burden on society as a whole.  I highly recommend taking less than four minutes to watch it.  The video is in Spanish with English subtitles.

Bikes at Antwerp Train Station

Utility Cycling Blog - Sat, 05/05/2012 - 00:13

If you had any doubt that bikes are popular in Belgium, than here’s some impressive proof.  This video by Copenhagenize shows the bicycle parking facilities at the Antwerp Central Station in Belgium.  There really are a lot of bikes at the station!  It’s encouraging to see videos of such great bicycle infrastructure, especially for bike parking in Europe, and it seems that similar infrastructure is starting to become somewhat more common in the U.S., as well.

Tips for Riding a Front Loader Cargo Bike

Utility Cycling Blog - Thu, 03/05/2012 - 07:12

I consider myself to be quite a good cyclist, but the first time I had the opportunity to ride a front loading cargo bike, I was somewhat surprised that, well, I couldn’t ride the bike.  At least not immediately.  I had run into Mike from Tucson Velo at a cycling event in Tucson, and he was out on his new CETMA cargo bike.  He let me try riding the front loading bike without weight, and I was completely befuddled!  I got the bike to move forward, slowly, but steering sure was a challenge.  Anyhow, this post via TransPortland has an interesting video about a cargo bike business and some good tips on riding a front loader.  Apparently one needs about half a day to begin to master the front loader.  The main tip – look to the horizon, not at the front wheel!  I’ll have to try that next time.  Enjoy!

The Convert

Utility Cycling Blog - Mon, 30/04/2012 - 23:44

May is National Bike Month, and there are a great deal of cool events happening all over the U.S.  To celebrate Jacksonville Bike Month, a group of amateur film makers made the following short film called The Convert.  It’s a great little film about…well, you can guess from the title.  But it is certainly fun to see the idea of someone taking up cycling dramatized in this film.  Via Bike Jax.

London’s Big Ride

Utility Cycling Blog - Fri, 27/04/2012 - 05:53

Cyclists in London are gathering this weekend on April 28 for a major cycling campaign called The Big Ride.  The event is supposed to be a fun way to get cyclists together and united for a serious cause, which is to call on the 2012 London mayoral candidates to take the issue of safe cycling seriously in their campaigns.  The main message is to “Love London, Go Dutch”, which suggests that London’s streets should strive to be more like those in Holland.  Sounds like a great idea!  Via Velo Mondial.

Eska folding bike.

Adelaide Cyclists discussions - Wed, 25/04/2012 - 22:11

I just picked up this little folding bike. It's an Eska, which I believe is Czech. Does anyone know anything about them? It rides okay, but needs a little love. I'm unsure whether to give it a full paint job or just clean it up.

Why are some road bikes sized in inches ?

Adelaide Cyclists discussions - Wed, 25/04/2012 - 21:35

My brother, Alan, in the UK is looking at buying his first road bike and is looking at THIS one.

Can anyone tell me though, why some bikes are sized using imperial inches rather than cm ?

Alan is looking for an entry level bike and wanted to spend a max of 600 UK pounds, so if anyone knows of a good bargain ( near the London area) we would be interested to know. ( Preferably 9 or 10 speed Tiagra,…
