For many years BISA has lobbied for the comprehensive planning of Adelaide's proposed Greenway Network to establish what opportunities exist for Greenway construction and to better understand how they might connect all corners of the very large city Adelaide has become.
After some intensive liaison and discussions with the Land Management Corporation and authorities responsible for planning new development in the Western Suburbs, BISA has received preliminary notice of a comprehensive planning study for the City-to-Outer Harbour Greenway. This Greenway will extend from the Adelaide City Council area through the cities of Charles Sturt and Port Adelaide, running parallel to (and possibly sometimes on) the rail reserve, along the beautiful railway boulevards the West is known for.
The LMC, who have responsibility for new Transport Oriented Developments along the rail line, assure us that they are "committed to ensuring that these projects incorporate a future greenway" and are working with those concerned on a concept plan for the whole of the corridor. This is a great outcome, not just for the City-to-Outer Harbour Greenway but also for the planning of other potential Greenways across the metro area, particularly in the Eastern and North Eastern areas of the City where - apart from the Linear Park - none have been formally identified.
BISA will continue to liaise with DTEI and the Office of the Minister for Transport, as well as the LMC, local Government and private developers to ensure that the potential of the Government's Greenway Policy are realised and the best possible outcome for bicycle users is achieved. We will keep Members and the cycling public informed as best we can via Pedal Update, E-News and the BISA and Adelaide Cyclist web sites.
